Linux/Unix – Obtain the OS release or version

If you want to know which OS version or release have any machines, follow this procedure.

 ls /etc/*release*

ls /etc/*version*
cat /path/file_that_ls_found

 

For example:

This will give you a file that contains the version.
penelope> ls /etc/*release*
/etc/SuSE-release
 
penelope> cat /etc/SuSE-release
SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 (i586)
VERSION = 9
PATCHLEVEL = 3
